VOLCANO SCENIC FLIGHT - AMBRYM/LOPEVI
Only 35 minutes flying time from Port Vila, Lopevi Island is the closest and most
accessible active volcano to Vanuatu's capital. Agreeably one of the most scenically spectacular islands in
the archipelago, with its emerald forested slopes, it casts a commanding presence, jutting clear out of the
water to a height of almost 4700 feet, forming the tallest peak in central Vanuatu. Lopevi’s explosive
activity has increased in recent times, experiencing eruptions for 7 of the last 9 years with lava flows
sometimes reaching the ocean, making it a popular attraction for those with a passion for volcanic
adventure.
A little further north from Lopevi, Ambrym is included in the top ten list of earth’s most
active volcanoes, having been in a regular state of eruption for over 200 years. Known locally as ‘Black Island’,
it possesses a moon like landscape where molten flows are regularly seen streaming from the constantly smoking twin
vents of Benbow and Marum.
